Jeff first visits a village that makes their living by capturing snakes to be milked for their venom, which is then made into anti-venom for people who have been bitten by snakes. He helps them capture a cobra to be taken in.
Funny Moment #1: One of the men warns Jeff that the cobra is angry and will bite, and additionally tells him, "You're going to die" as Jeff picks up the cobra behind the head. Next, Jeff milks a cobra, and then a "cantankerous" viper, and has a bit of trouble handling the latter. As he later said in his journal,it was as if it had a "grand mal seizure" in his hand. Funny Moment #2: In his search for Train B, Jeff runs into a random cow. In Jeff's Journal, he explains how he first thought that the center would not let him help milk snakes. Turns out, the man was shaking his head, which in India means yes instead of no. Next, Jeff looks through a newspaper for mentions of animals, and finds the Shirala festival that he will attend later on. Then, Jeff watches "mahoots," who have trained the elephants since they were both young, bathe their elephants. One of them almost blows out Jeff's ear drum when it trumpets! Jeff next rides a bike and remarks on monkeys and other animals that live on the city streets. But the streets are crowded, and he soon takes a Jeep in search of reptiles outside the city. He finds a desert sand boa, and demonstrates how it curls up and how it moves. Back on the train, Jeff explains the difference between first and fourth class- which is on the top of the train! Jeff visits a Hindu temple where rats are revered and fed, believed to be reincarnated children. He finds a white rat, which are considered especially sacred. He also decides not to drink some of the sugared milk left for the rats. Next, Jeff runs into some camels while driving. Funny moment #3: "Look mommy, I'm riding the camel!" He also mentions to the camel something about finding Obi-Wan Kenobi. There are quite a few creatures in Star Wars that could resemble camels, aren't there? Passing by a tree, Jeff finds a green vine snake. He makes his hands act similar branches, but when stops the snake seems to be deciding whether to bite him or not. Funny moment #4: Jeff talks about the bathrooms on the trains- a whole in the floor. On the way to the festival, Jeff stops in Chennai, where he meets someone to visit crocodiles and garnials (Okay, I know I massacred the spelling- please forgive me, I looked hard!) He helps capture a female croc to be relocated to another enclosure. Searching for more cobras, Jeff visits a peanut field, where cobras are helpful to the farmers because they eat the rats that eat the peanuts. Arriving at last at the cobra festival, Jeff visits a home where the snake is a special guest and given gifts. It is controversial however, because the snakes are taken from the wild and put under stress. Finally, at the end of the festival, Jeff dances with an orange scarf on his head Funny moment #5: Holding a snake, Jeff says to the cameraman, "She doesn't like you very much" when it strikes at the camera. This episode was very educational, not only because of the interesting creatures Jeff encountered, but was a great source of Indian culture. There was tons of information about India, and the animals that live there.
